Ghan – A luxury train that travels transcontinentally across Australia, through Adelaide, Alice Springs and Darwin. The Ghan continues the legacy of Afghan cameleers who transported goods on camels to the Australian outback (Travel agents online Australia) and serviced the Australian pastoral industry. Hence, the name ‘Ghan’.

Before the Ghan came into being there were camel trains i.e, camels that transported materials necessary for survival in harsh Australian arid climate. The camels along with the cameleers were brought by ships who resided in the then British occupied provinces.

The camel trains were instrumental in establishing and sustaining towns and villages in the otherwise inhabitable Australian outback.

The Ghan

It undertakes a massive transcontinental journey of almost 3000 kilometres through the arid and scenic Australian outback. But the Ghan as we know today was not always like this. The blueprint for the Ghan was laid early in the year 1877 by the Former Central and North Australia Railways. The railway lines till Alice Springs were laid in the year 1929 and several decades later in 2001, construction of lines from Alice Springs to Darwin commenced. And in 2004, 126 years later, the Ghan finally journeyed from Adelaide to Darwin.

With the route completed, the Ghan brought in a new dawn in the Australian outback by making more freight travel possible and as a result more progress. But perhaps the most significant impact was made on tourism, as today the Ghan is revered as one of the world’s greatest passenger trains. Get the Best Value Ghan Holiday Packages Here.
