Your Self drive Itinerary

Day 1 Hobart

After arriving in Hobart, spend the afternoon exploring Salamanca and wander into artist studios and galleries that fill the sandstone warehouses before settling onto an outdoor seat for dinner at one of the many delicious restaurants dotted around Salamanca.

Day 2 Hobart

For lovers of wine and fresh produce, the award-winning Salamanca Markets held every Saturday offers artisan produce and local crafts, or feast on local produce at the Farmers Markets, every Sunday. Take a short drive to Coal Valley, renowned for their cool-climate wineries and farm-to-gate produce, or add on a Iron Pot Cruise, taking you along the maritime waterways of Hobart, stopping at Australia’s oldest lighthouse and circumnavigating Betsey Island.

Day 3 Hobart to Port Arthur to Coles Bay (334 km)., Freycinet Peninsula

Make an early start today stopping along the way to take in the sights and attractions before arriving into Coles Bay. If time permits, take a slight detour through the heritage town of Richmond, famous for the Richmond Bridge and elegant Georgian architecture or spend a few hours at Australia’s most infamous convict settlement at Port Arthur Historic Site before making your way to the Freycinet Peninsula.

If you are a lover of seafood, The Fish Van at Tribunna, serves fresh local fish, most from the pristine waters off Maria Island. A further 40 minutes up the coast, stop into Swansea for a sweet treat at Kate’s Berry Farm, or stock up on house-made jams or chocolate coated berries. Before or on arrival at your hotel, ensure you have a National Parks Pass, which can be purchased at any Rangers Station or at the hotel direct.

Day 4 Coles Bay., Coles Bay

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before venturing out and exploring the spectacular Freycinet Peninsula. Head up to Wineglass Bay lookout for the postcard perfect view across the bay, it will take you 45 minutes to climb and it will be worth every step! Now that you have seen it from above, why not add on a Wineglass Bay Cruise and glide along the stunning granite coastline of the bay and witness the dramatic pink peaks of the Hazards range. Feeling peckish? Visit the nearby Freycinet Marine Farm to taste fresh oysters and mussels harvested daily, with other seafood sourced from local fishermen.

Day 5 Coles Bay to Bicheno (35km), Bicheno

Enjoy a relaxing morning before making your way to the seaside town of Bicheno. Take a scenic walk to Rocking Rock, the Blowhole to witness saltwater fly up into the air, and along the sandbar to Diamond Island Nature Reserve. At dusk, get up close to the fairy penguins as the waddle across the beach.

Day 6 Bicheno to St Helens (73km), St Helens

As you head to St Helens, stop at the Iron House Brewery, located at White Sand Estate to enjoy beer tasting and learn about the handcrafted brews made using traditional recipes and water from the Estate’s own spring or enjoy a bite to eat at the Brewhaus Cafe & Bar.

Just 10km north of St Helens you will find The Bay of Fires, extending along the coast from Binalong Bay in the south to Eddystone Point in the north. Witness the turquoise-coloured ocean and the breathtaking white beach fringed with huge orange lichen-covered boulders that line the bay. Take a drive along the coast to The Gardens, where you will have a scenic view of the bay.

Day 7 St Helens to Launceston (164km).., Launceston

As you depart St Helens today, stop at The Purple Possum in St Marys where you will find an interesting mix of cafe, wholefoods, mini-gallery and bric-a-brac shed in the back garden. It’s worth having a look! You may wish to extend your stay in Tasmania and add a night or two in Launceston.
